Berry Gordy the man who built Motown

Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, revolutionized the music industry with his vision and talent. He not only discovered and nurtured some of the greatest artists of all time, but he also instilled a sense of ambition in his family. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming a music mogul is a testament to the power of determination and creativity.

After bravely serving in the Korean War, Berry returned to the United States and began building a life for himself. In 1953, he married Thelma Louise Coleman, and together they had three children: Hazel Joy Gordy, Berry Gordy IV, and Terry James Gordy. However, the couple divorced in 1959, and Berry moved on to marry Raynoma Singleton, with whom he had one child, Kerry Gordy, in 1959. This personal journey laid the foundation for the creative powerhouse that is Motown.

Motown Records took flight in 1960, thanks to the incredible talent of artists like Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, and Marvin Gaye. Berry's ability to recognize and develop talent was unmatched, and during his time at Motown, he expanded his family further. He welcomed daughter Sherry Gordy with Jeana Jackson and son Kennedy William Gordy with Margaret Norton. His romantic involvement with Diana Ross also produced a daughter, Rhonda Ross, and his legacy continued to grow with the arrival of Stefan Kendal “Refoo” Gordy with Nancy Leiviska.
