Tim Allen: A Comedic Legacy Anchored By Family

Whether you know him from his popular TV sitcoms like Home Improvement or Last Man Standing, or from his movies like The Santa Clause and Toy Story, you’d know that Tim Allen has had quite the career. However, there is something that is a lot more important to him than his Hollywood accomplishments: his kids.

The 68-year-old had his first child, Katherine, in 1989, with his wife at the time, Laura Deibel. The pair tied the knot in 1984 before parting ways in 2003. It would be 20 years before the comedian would have another child, as in 2009 he welcomed his daughter Elizabeth with his second and current wife, actress Jane Hajduk. The couple married in 2006.

Back in 2017, Tim exclusively told Closer he learned from the mistakes he made earlier in his life; he was arrested for drug trafficking in 1978 and spent two years and four months in federal prison.

“It was a watershed moment,” said the comic. “It put me in a position of great humility, and I was able to make amends to friends and family and refocus my life on setting and achieving goals.”

“I’m not the same guy I was the first time [I was married] when I was hiding and doing what people who drink too much do. I was not connecting,” he continued. “But I’ve been sober for almost 20 years. I’m much more present.”

Tim joked, however, that his daughters still don’t think he’s very funny. “The older one will roll her eyes, and the younger one just stares at me,” the actor added. “I think she’s done with me, but I still try to play jokes and make them laugh.”

Now, Tim shares his affection with both his real and TV families. His Last Man Standing character “has three daughters, so his whole vision is through his treasure, his girls,” he tells Closer. Adds Home Improvement wife Patricia Richardson, “Tim gets to fully be the loving father and husband he is, which is so genuine in him. It’s what makes him so lovable.”

“I’m 68 percent joyous, aiming for 70 percent,” Tim quipped at the time. “I’m also extremely grateful for where I am today.”
